Music reviews the world over are written to provide an evaluation, albeit subjective, of record releases in a bid to provide the reader with information on genre, originality, musicality and other aspects that give the context within which the record has been released.

This gives a critical view of a release that is ideally supposed to be independent of the hype or the non-hype of any record. This is the third release after the surprise hit Isambo Lyamfwa in and the less successful but critically acclaimed Ilyashi Ilikaya in In short, the album is ten tracks of strong messages and occasional humour sung with tunes that sound very similar.

Similar within the album and also similar to other songs in their last two albums. All the songs are played in the rich Zambian Kalindula beat but this is not enough to guarantee a good record.

The musical content is getting weaker with every release from this great semi-gospel band from Chingola. The production, which is the managerial aspect of choosing the right material and right arrangement, is weak in this record.

This is disappointing coming from a group with such promise and probably the only group of Zambia's young artistes performing what can be arguably called typical Zambian music.

It seems obvious that the group could do with different songwriters and arrangers as opposed to just depending on Jonathan Chibesa. The variety in the arrangement and tunes of the songs is what set the great P. Chishala from others. No two songs by this great man sound alike. The record opens with the title track Tata Mpeniko Amano, sung in Bemba, about a child asking for wisdom on how to live in marriage. It is probably the height of the record and will probably be a favorite at weddings and kitchen parties with its rich Bemba proverbs and imagery.

It ends with the dance part that is typical of Kalindula songs. Mututangate is a gospel song sung in Bemba Catholic tradition where the singer is begging for God's help. It urges those who are sick, the jobless and the suffering to seek God's help who does not fail. This is the second and probably the only other song that is discernable, in tune, from other songs. Mwebalume bandi sounds, in content, like a continuation of Akulasanikwa from their second album, Ilyashi Ilikaya.

It is song about a mean husband. Ifwe ba Glorious is a tribute to the departed great Zambian musicians. Ubututu, is a humorous song that makes fun of the Bemba traditional cousins, the Easterners, who are fond of giving unusual names to their children like names of cellphones.Popular influences have always been part of the Zambian music since colonial times. Zambian popular music has continued to evolve and adapt to the tunes and rhythms that define popular music in both a regional and global context.

Following the rise of Zam-Rock and Kalindula pop music in the 70s and 80s, it is apparent that a lot of changes have occurred and continue to be observed. Short for Zambian Rock 'n' Roll, Zam-Rock emerged in the s as a gritty and psychedelic style with dance at its core, typical of Afro-rock in general. Initially, Zam-Rock typically imitated western rock music, until Tolamil Walya and Isaac Makpikwe added a unique flavour to it, drawing on local influences.

During its decade-long peak, Zam-Rock enjoyed a huge local fanbase, with concerts attracting large audiences, especially in main cities such as Lusaka and Chingola. Zam-Rock brought with it a rebellious sub-culture characteristic of American rock 'n' roll culture that involved defying conservative inclinations. In the past few years Zam-Rock has experienced a resurgence due to interest from western music lovers and researchers.

Rikki and Jagari have since staged shows in Gemany and France while also being subjects of a new Zam-Rock documentary. Kalindula music was popular from the s through to the late s. It brought with it a feeling of national unity, as evidenced by its adoption of different languages in its lyrical content and social commentary. It fostered Zambians' passion and tolerance for its many diverse cultures.

Kalindula music is based on folklore. For instance, the Serenje Kalindula Band was largely based on lala folklore and pop culture, PK Chishala's songs were influenced by Ushi mythology and folklore, while the Uweka Stars ' 'Grace' emanated from the Njanja folklore. In more recent times, popular appreciation of Kalindula music has failed to dwindle into extinction. The Amayenge Cultural Ensemble has continued to churn out new songs and perform at live shows. This has served as a reminder of the important place that Kalindula popular has in the Zambian music industry.

It remains partly influenced by traditional music and Kalindula in particular. After pioneering the Zed Beats sound, Danny remains one of the most popular progenitors of this sound. Unlike some of his contemporaries, he uses live instruments during live shows, supplied by the More Fire Band. Danny had released numerous successful albums. The Zambian pop music scene has traditionally been dominated by male artists.

New emerging artists have continued to push the boundaries of Zed Beats, thanks to the likes of Mumba Yachi. Muziq and Chester. P Jay and Chester in particular are celebrated for their vocals. Though Zed Beats seem to be flourishing as a uniquely Zambian pop genre, it continues to incorporate different sounds from further afield.

This can be heard in J Roxy's 'Auto Pilot', for example, a smash hit that could have been easily mistaken for a Nigerian or Ghanaian track.

His debut single 'Heart' was well received by the Zambian public. Some blame the lack of live music instruments and the preference for computer-generated beats, which make live performances an issue of performing to backing tracks playback or even lip-syncing, to the frustration of many listeners.

Munshya has noted this trend by describing Zed Beats, as well as local dancehall and hip-hop as 'over-processed'. Zed Beats is currently enjoying a prolonged resurgence in airplay, both on radio and in clubs.

Most nightclubs and pubs in Zambia have embraced Zed Beats their lyrical content and danceable rhythms. Hopefully this will challenge new talent to focus on live instrumentation and rich lyrics if they are to be taken seriously.

Amidst the global rise of hip-hop, a uniquely Zambian form of the genre has emerged, known as Zed Hip-hop. It has brought with it not just a sound but an entire subculture, as seen in its fashion or lifestyle, closely related to western hip-hop. Kopala Swag is not just a music camp but also a growing fashion trend, as seen by the many T-shirts and caps bearing this brand.

Some artists from both genres have also released controversial, politically-charged songs.Popular influences have always been part of the Zambian music since colonial times. He also has 10 tackles for loss and 3 sacks. Edwards has 67 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss and 2 sacks. Ohio State is averaging 43. Barrett is 217-for-328 passing for 2,728 yards, 33 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. He is second on the team in rushing with 672 yards and 9 scores. Though Barrett injured his knee last Saturday, with coach Urban Meyer blaming it on a cameraman, Barrett is expected to play. On the ground, freshman J. Dobbins leads the way. Dobbins has 1,190 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns.

Mike Weber adds 602 rushing yards and a team-best 10 touchdowns. Through the air, K. Hill paces the team with 51 receptions, while Parris Campbell is No. As longtime Big Ten foes, Ohio State and Wisconsin have a long history. The Buckeyes have dominated for much of the series history, going 58-18-5.

Ohio State even won 21 games in a row from 1960 to 1980. Currently, Ohio State has beaten Wisconsin five consecutive times. Four of those victories have been close. The one exception was in 2014, when the Buckeyes crushed the Badgers 59-0 in the Big Ten title game and used that to earn a spot in the College Football Playoff. Ohio State would go on to win the national championship, its first since 2002.

What does it all mean. How much can you win. What needs to happen. The odds will determine how much you will win in return for the money you bet (stake). Odds are determined by the probability of a certain outcome arriving.

Coming into the game, the Sharks topped the regular season table and earned home ground advantage, so they were the favourites. Bookmakers thought they were the most likely team to win, with Western Province the outsiders and even bigger odds on the draw. The numbers next to each outcome (odds) tells you how much you will receive if that particular result arrives.

Your payout is determined by the odds and your stake. In this case, punters who backed the Sharks would win 55c for every Rand they bet. So a R100 bet would return R55, plus your original stake of R100. Anyone who bet on Western Province would get R150 for every R100 bet. There you have it. Not too difficult hey. The Sharks vs Western ProvinceThe Sharks win 0.If you have a car, keep your grocery bags in it and remember to bring them into the store with you.

And one more thing: reusable bags are not just for groceries. Carry them for all your purchases, from electronics to clothing. Some examples of convenient containers are:Stainless containers from Life Without Plastic, Eco Lunchbox, LunchBots, and others.

This process helps me to remember my reusable mug next time. I could have just as easily used my own stainless steel utensils.

Akulasanikwa

A single use plastic device meant to save a single use cardboard box. What about all the marine animals that swallow that type of disposable plastic. That keeps my ice cream consumption down, which is better for my health, and it also does away with the plastic-lined containers as well.

Ice cream cones require zero container or utensil waste. If I do want to bring some home, I can have my ice cream handpacked in my own container.

This eliminates the need for all disposable bottles glass as well as plastic. Especially in the summer. So I got a Soda Stream Penguin soda maker for those times I crave some fizz. The soda maker itself is plastic, but the carafes are glass, and the soda maker replaces hundreds of disposable bottles. At the bakery down the street, I can have my bread placed in my own cloth bag and avoid all packaging. Bread keeps fresh when stored in the cloth bag inside an airtight tin.

I reuse a popcorn tin that was sent to me as a gift several years ago. Often, thrift stores have more of these tins than they know what to do with. And since I buy so few new things, I can afford to spend more for quality, plastic-free food.

See my post Fresh Bread: Buy It, Store It, Keep It Fresh Without Plastic. Ask your local grocer to take them back. Or empty your berries into your own container before leaving the store and leave the plastic basket behind. If enough of us do this, perhaps merchants will take note.

Unfortunately, the milk bottle does contain an unrecyclable plastic cap. But I would rather buy milk in a glass bottle capped with plastic than milk contained in plastic on all sides. Going in on it with friends can make it more affordable. Check out my instructions for storing cheese without plastic. I agonized for a while over which brands of frozen meals used the best containers, but in the end there was just no sound alternative. They all use plastic. Even frozen food trays that seem to be made of cardboard are lined with plastic.

Read more about plastic in chewing gum here. The key is bringing my own reusable bags and containers with me to the store.
